SEO for a commercial parasols company, competing in a highly competitive SEO arena.

Rage Web Design were approached in early 2011 by the German commercial patio parasol supplier MAY Parasols who recently released a new website in German and were enjoying the benefits of a brand new website. We were recommended to them from our continued dealings with another UK commerical parasols supplier, who provide a more general alfresco outdoor dining area design service.

MAY parasols had a Joomla based content management system and were in need of an English version of their new website.

We cloned the mysql database, and the Joomla Template from the German site, placed it on to the domain patioparasols.com and translated the contents of the database into English.


We are now working extensively on the SEO of the new English version of the UK and US targeted MAY parasols website.

A few interesting issues to the SEO expert were and are still under scrutiny during this projects duration.

Is a duplicate site, on a different domain, but in another language going to be affected by the duplicate content penalties that Google can somnetimes apply. We say sometimes loosely because I have seen many sites where Google's algorithm has failed to identify obvious duplication of domains.

WIll the English version of the site do better than the German site for similar terms based on the fact that that domain name for the English version of the site (patioparasols.com) contains one of its primary keywords for the phrase commercial parasols? At the moment (Late 2011) gut instincts are that google will indeed reward the domain name for having the parasols part in the .com but we are expecting a shift in this. Indeed if this shift doesn't come soon, I can see a lot of desperate clients making a switch to keyword rich domains.

Can we get Parasols optimised for the UK market and Umbrellas for the US market, whilst keeping the text held within the site clear, concise and readable to both market?
